Everything you need to know about Patara to Side
Private Transfer from Patara to Side
Patara and Side sit at very different points of the Turkish Mediterranean. One is a quiet farming village beside Turkey's longest sand beach. The other is an ancient port on a small peninsula, with Roman columns standing a few steps from the sea. The road between them covers about 194 kilometres and takes roughly 3 hours and 24 minutes, which is 204 minutes by the clock.
That is a real journey, not a quick hop between two resorts. This guide explains what the drive is like, how to plan the day around it, and what waits for you in Side when the car stops. It also covers the return trip to the airport and the day trips you can reach from both ends.
A private transfer from Turkey Transfer collects you at your accommodation in Patara. It takes you to your address in Side without bus stations, changes or timetables. Your luggage stays in the boot from the first minute to the last.
The Drive from Patara to Side
Leaving Gelemiş
Patara is officially the village of Gelemiş, and the road out of it is a narrow village lane. You pass orange groves, small pensions and the entrance to the ancient city. Behind you stays the 18-kilometre beach where loggerhead turtles nest between May and October.
If you want a last look at the dunes, tell your driver the evening before. A short stop at the beach car park costs only a few minutes. It is a better farewell than the view from a hotel window.
The lane joins the main coastal road, the D400. From here the character of the journey changes. The road is wider and the villages become towns. The Lycian coast opens up in long, curving stretches.
The Lycian coast road
The D400 follows the shoreline and the foothills of the Taurus Mountains. On one side you see pine-covered slopes. On the other you see bright water, small bays and the occasional yacht moored in a cove.
Kalkan lies only about twenty minutes from Patara. Its white houses climb the hillside above a small marina. Kaş and the boat trips to sunken Kekova are roughly 45 minutes further along the coast road. These towns give the first part of the drive a postcard feel.
Further east the road crosses the plain around Demre, a name known to many travellers because of its link to Saint Nicholas. After that it passes through the farming and greenhouse country near Finike and Kumluca. This is one of the most productive stretches of the south coast, and in the right season the air smells of citrus.
Through the pine hills toward Antalya
Beyond Kumluca the road rises and falls through forested headlands. Turn-offs lead to places such as Olympos and Çıralı, and later to Phaselis and the resort towns around Kemer. This is the most scenic part of the drive. The road is curved, the views reach far out to sea, and the pine scent comes in through the vents.
After Kemer the mountains step back and the Antalya plain opens out. The road passes the edge of the city of Antalya and continues east. From there the way to Side runs across flat, green country, past the Belek golf resorts and on to Manavgat.
Typical and busy times
With a duration of 204 minutes, plan on the better part of an afternoon or a long morning. Treat the time as a guide, not a promise. The coast road is a single main route for much of its length, and one slow lorry can hold up a line of cars.
Traffic is usually lighter early in the morning and in the shoulder seasons. It is heavier on summer weekends, around the Antalya ring road and near the Manavgat junction in the late afternoon. If you have a flight to catch or a check-in time to meet, add a buffer.
Any stop you request adds to the total. A twenty-minute coffee break turns a 3 hour 24 minute drive into almost four hours door to door. That is normal for a trip this long and your driver will tell you if time is getting tight.
Choosing your departure time
Many travellers leave Patara between eight and ten in the morning. That timing reaches Side in the early afternoon, in time for a late lunch or a swim before dinner. It also avoids the hottest part of the day on the road.
An early start of six or seven suits guests who want to arrive in time for a full first afternoon at the beach. A later start suits families with young children who need a slow morning. A private car lets you pick whichever pattern works.
If you plan to see a sight on the way, such as Saklıkent Gorge, leave earlier. The turn-offs toward the gorge branch from the same coast road that you follow out of Patara, and the stop is worth half a day by itself.
Comfort on a Long Transfer
In the car
A drive of more than three hours asks more of a vehicle than a short airport run. Our cars are clean and air-conditioned, with room for suitcases, beach bags and pushchairs. Tell us in advance how many people and how many bags travel, and we choose the vehicle that fits.
Sit where you like. Small groups often prefer the back seats, while a family with children may want one adult in the front to pass snacks. The driver speaks English and answers questions about the coast, but he leaves you to nap or read if you prefer quiet.
Children and infants
Child seats are available on request. Give the ages of your children when you book, and we prepare the right seat. For a long ride, children usually do best when you plan the day around their routine. Leave after breakfast, let them sleep through the pine hills, and stop once for a snack and a run around.
Ask for the stop in advance. Your driver knows the rest areas along the D400 and can pick a clean one with space to walk. A quiet car park and a cold drink make a big difference to a six-year-old after two hours in a seat.
Why Private Beats the Bus on This Route
There is no direct public bus between Patara and Side. A coach journey means first reaching Fethiye or Antalya, changing to another service and carrying your bags between stations. The wait can easily add several hours.
A street taxi covers the distance too, but over almost 200 kilometres the cost is hard to predict and the price must be agreed carefully. A private transfer booked ahead removes that uncertainty. You know your pickup time and your destination, and the driver knows the route.
The private car also keeps the journey flexible. Want a photo of the bay below Kalkan? Ask. Want a swim at a quiet cove? Ask. Need to change the Side hotel address because your plans shifted? Send a message and the driver adjusts.
Arriving in Side
Where the car stops
Side is a small peninsula with an old town at its tip. Cars can approach the old town, but the lanes within it are narrow and parts are pedestrian only. Your driver will take you as close as the rules allow, and he will help with luggage on the final walk.
If your hotel stands in the old town, expect a short walk over stone paving. If your hotel stands on the beaches outside it, the car usually reaches the door. Give us the exact hotel name and address when you book.
Check-in times vary by property. If you arrive in the early afternoon, most hotels will take your bags even when the room is not ready, which leaves you free to swim or have lunch.
Late arrivals
Plan for the drive's full length when your arrival is late. A departure at four in the afternoon reaches Side in the evening, with most restaurants still open. A late-evening departure arrives after midnight. Tell the hotel in advance so that someone waits at reception.
Areas of Side and Who Each Suits
The old town peninsula
The old town is the heart of Side. It is a compact grid of lanes with Roman columns, small hotels, cafés, souvenir shops and sea views on both flanks. Staying here puts the theatre, the temple and the harbour on your doorstep.
It suits couples, history lovers and travellers who like to walk to dinner. It is livelier in the evenings than quieter beach areas, and the lanes get busy in high season.
The east and west beaches
Long sandy beaches run on both sides of the peninsula. The beach to the east is popular with hotel guests, and the sand shelves gently into the water, which families appreciate. The beach to the west looks toward the old harbour and the columns of the Temple of Apollo near the shore.
These areas suit families who want easy access to the sea and a short stroll into town. Many hotels sit within walking distance of the old centre.
Manavgat and the surroundings
Manavgat is the market town and river gateway just inland from Side. Staying outside the peninsula gives you local life, fresh produce stalls and a quieter pace. It works for longer stays and for people who prefer a town with year-round residents.
What to See in Side
The Roman theatre
The great Roman theatre is the largest landmark. Its tiers climb up from the town, and from the upper rows you see the sea, the peninsula and the line of mountains behind. It is worth visiting early or late in the day, when the stone is warm and the crowds thin.
The Temple of Apollo
The columns of the Temple of Apollo stand close to the water on the western side. They are most striking at sunset, when the stone turns gold and the sea behind goes pink and grey. Many visitors walk there after dinner and sit on the nearby wall.
The old town lanes
The cobbled lanes lead past shops selling ceramics, leather, linen and spices. Cafés sit in courtyards under old trees. Walk without a plan and you will find small corners with columns half built into house walls.
Beaches and Swimming
Side is a beach destination first. The sand is fine, the water is calm and the beaches slope gently into the sea. Many sections are organised with sunbeds and umbrellas, and others stay open and simple.
Compared with Patara, the beaches here are more developed. Patara offers a long, wild stretch of dunes with little else, while Side gives you cafés, water sports and easy access. If you are moving from one to the other, expect a change from quiet nature to lively seaside infrastructure.
The sea is warm in summer and pleasant from late spring to autumn. Guests travelling in the early months of the season often find the water cooler than in August.
Food and Evenings in Side
Dinner by the sea
The old town and harbour hold many restaurants. Fish, grilled meat, meze and fresh salads are the staples. Tables near the water fill early on summer evenings, so arrive before sunset if you want a sea view.
After dark
Evenings in Side centre on the old town. People stroll the lanes, browse shops that stay open late and sit in cafés near the harbour. Bars and music venues are scattered through the old centre and along the beaches, although the area is not as late-night loud as some larger resorts.
For a calm evening, take a walk to the Temple of Apollo after dinner. The columns are lit, and the sea air is cool.
Families with Children
Side suits families for several reasons. The beaches are shallow and sandy. The old town is compact and easy for children to explore. The ruins feel like a playground of columns, arches and steps, which children enjoy.
For the transfer, plan the timing around naps and meals. Ask for child seats when you book. Pack snacks, water, a favourite toy and a light blanket. A tablet loaded with films helps in the long flat section across the Antalya plain.
When you arrive, give children time to settle before sightseeing. A swim first, then a gentle walk around the old town in the evening, is a good rhythm.
Early Flights and Late-Night Travel
From Patara to the airport
If your flight leaves from Antalya or Dalaman, the plan changes. Dalaman Airport is about 68 kilometres from Patara, roughly an hour to an hour and fifteen minutes depending on season and traffic. Antalya Airport lies on the route between Patara and Side, so it is a natural stop on the way east.
Leaving Side for an early flight
Side is a coastal town with a long drive to the nearest large airport, which is Antalya. The journey normally takes a bit over an hour, depending on traffic, so leave generous time. For an early morning departure, a pick-up before dawn is standard.
Tell us your flight number and departure time when you book. We help you choose a pickup time that leaves comfortable time for check-in and security. For international flights, most guests aim to reach the terminal about three hours before departure.
Night drives
A night transfer is possible. The roads are quieter but darker, and the winding sections between Kumluca and Kemer need care. Your driver is used to this coast and will drive at a pace that keeps you comfortable.
If you arrive late at your hotel, message the reception ahead of time. Many properties have a night desk, but a small hotel in the old town may need notice.
The Return Trip
Timing for the airport
A trip from Side back toward the airport begins with the drive across flat country, usually without heavy hills. Plan the pickup according to your flight. For a morning flight, leave in the dark. For an afternoon flight, a relaxed late-morning start is enough.
Add a buffer in summer, when airport roads fill with coaches and cars.
Going back toward Patara
If you are returning to Patara after a stay in Side, the same 194-kilometre route applies in reverse and takes roughly 3 hours and 24 minutes. Consider leaving in the morning so that you reach Gelemiş while the beach is still bright. If you leave late, you arrive in the evening, when the village is quiet.
Day Trips from Side
Aspendos and Perge
Two of the best-preserved ancient sites in Turkey lie close to Side. Aspendos has a Roman theatre with a remarkably complete stage building. Perge, nearer to Antalya, has a stadium, a colonnaded street and a gate. Both fit into one day if you start early.
Manavgat Waterfall
The falls at Manavgat sit a short distance from Side. They are low and wide rather than tall, and a riverside setting with cafés makes it an easy outing. Boat trips on the Manavgat River are a popular add-on.
Antalya and Kaleiçi
Antalya's old quarter, Kaleiçi, is a day trip by road. Its harbour, narrow lanes and Ottoman houses are rewarding to wander. Combine it with the museum or a boat trip along the cliffs.
Ask your driver or your hotel about options. For longer outings with a vehicle at your disposal, a private driver saves the work of arranging buses.
Day Trips from Patara Before You Leave
If you spend extra days in Patara before the transfer, the area is rich with excursions.
- Xanthos and Letoon, both UNESCO World Heritage sites, are about ten minutes away. Xanthos was the political capital of Lycia, and Letoon was its religious sanctuary.
- Kalkan has a yacht-lined marina and old town restaurants, about 20 minutes away by car.
- Kaş and the boat trips to Kekova are around 45 minutes further along the coast road.
- Saklıkent Gorge, one of the deepest canyons on the Mediterranean, and the hilltop ruins of Tlos and Pınara are each around an hour away.
- Fethiye, the region's main town, lies roughly an hour and a quarter from Patara.
Within the village itself, the ancient city sits beside the beach entrance. Allow a morning for it. The Patara Lighthouse, built under Emperor Nero and among the oldest lighthouses identified, stands on the headland south of the beach. The Roman theatre, the granary of Hadrian and the Arch of Mettius Modestus are all near the main gate. Patara is also said by local tradition to be the birthplace of Saint Nicholas, and its Bouleuterion is one reason historians mention the city in the story of representative government.
A day or two in Patara before the transfer lets you see all this at an easy pace, then drive east with the memory of the dunes still fresh.
Seasons and When to Travel
Spring
From April to early June the coast is green and the weather mild. Wild flowers cover the hills, the sea is still cool, and crowds are small. Roads are quiet, and the drive from Patara to Side feels relaxed. Turtle nesting on Patara begins in May.
Summer
July and August are hot and busy. Beaches are full, restaurants need early arrival, and the roads carry more cars and coaches. Start the transfer early in the day to avoid the strongest heat, and keep water in the car.
Autumn
September and October are among the best months. The sea holds its summer warmth, the light is softer and the crowds thin. Turtle nests are still active in Patara until October. The drive is pleasant, with clear views along the coast.
Winter
Winter is mild but quieter. Some beach businesses close, and seasonal restaurants shut. Rain can fall in the mountain sections, and the light fades early. If you travel then, plan to arrive in daylight and check opening hours for the places you want to visit in Side.
Booking Your Transfer
Booking takes only a few minutes online. Enter your pickup address in Patara, your destination in Side, the date and time, the number of travellers and any child-seat needs. We confirm the details and prepare the vehicle.
Give a phone number you can answer while travelling. Your driver may need to contact you on the day, particularly if your pension in Gelemiş sits down a narrow lane. Share the exact hotel name for both ends.
For groups, state the number of suitcases as well as the number of people. A family of five with five large bags needs a larger vehicle than a couple with two. We match the car to your party so that nobody travels squeezed.
If your plans shift, send us a message as early as you can. We adapt the pickup time or address where possible.

It is a long ride, but a comfortable one in a private car with space, air conditioning and a driver who knows the coast.
Plan your departure time, decide which stops matter to you and tell us about your party. Then sit back. Your private transfer from Patara to Side starts at your door and ends at your door.

The ground truth
Side
Side is a Roman harbour town that never got out of the way of its own ruins: the main street runs between colonnades, and the Temple of Apollo stands on the point where the peninsula ends. Modern Side spreads either side into Colakli, Kumkoy and Evrenseki, which is where most of the hotels actually are.

Known for
- 01A Greco-Roman old town you walk through rather than visit — shops and restaurants sit among the ruins
- 02The Temple of Apollo on the headland, best at sunset, and free to walk up to
- 03One of the largest surviving Roman theatres in Anatolia, right at the town entrance
- 04The Manavgat river and waterfall a few kilometres inland
- 05Hotel districts — Colakli, Kumkoy, Sorgun, Evrenseki — that are separate places, not addresses in Side
Worth your time
Before you land
- Cars are restricted in the old town — transfers drop at the entrance, and it is a short flat walk in.
- Say Colakli, Kumkoy, Sorgun or Evrenseki if that is where your hotel is; "Side" alone can mean a 10 km difference.
- Sorgun sits in pine forest east of the centre and is quieter than the beach strip — worth knowing before you book.
