Private Transfer from Side to Patara

Side and Patara sit at opposite ends of a very long stretch of Turkish coastline. Side is a Roman harbour town on a small peninsula in Manavgat, with columns standing a few steps from the beach bars. Patara is the ancient capital of Lycia, backed by one of the longest sand beaches in the country and by dunes that have barely changed in centuries. The road between them covers 194 km and takes around 204 minutes, which is 3 hours and 24 minutes, in normal traffic.

That is a proper journey, not a quick hop. Most travellers make it because they are moving on from a Side resort to the quieter western coast, or because they want to see Patara's beach and ruins without handling several bus changes. A private car makes the day simple. You are collected at your hotel in Side, you sit down once, and the driver does the rest. The notes below describe the road, the practical points at both ends, and how to get the most out of Patara once you arrive.

The Drive: What 194 km Looks Like

The route follows the D400 coastal highway westward. It leaves the Side and Manavgat area, passes around Antalya, and then carries on past Kemer and Kumluca into the far west of the Antalya province and beyond. The whole trip is shaped by the Taurus Mountains, which run close to the sea for much of the way.

Leaving Side and Manavgat

The first part is easy and flat. You leave the peninsula, pass the hotel belt that stretches from the old town towards Çolaklı and Titreyengöl, and join the main highway at Manavgat. Pine trees and orange groves line the roadside, with the mountains as a backdrop on the right. This section is good for settling in. Most passengers take a last look at the Temple of Apollo columns on the way out of town, if their hotel is close to the old centre.

Skirting Antalya

The middle of the journey passes around Antalya, the largest city on this coast. This is where the road is busiest, because airport traffic, local commuters and holiday traffic share the same corridors. Antalya Airport lies roughly 65 km from Side, and travellers who have used the airport transfer will recognise the first half of this road. If you travelled in from the airport on the D400 earlier in your holiday, you have already seen this stretch. Now you are simply continuing past the city rather than turning off towards it.

Kemer, Kumluca and the Western Coast

Beyond Antalya the scenery changes. The mountains close in on the sea, and the highway runs along steep slopes with views of the water below. Kemer sits on the edge of the pine-covered mountains. Further along, Kumluca marks the point where the coast becomes quieter and more rural, with greenhouses, small farms and long open views. This is the most spectacular part of the drive. It is also the part where a private driver is most useful, because you can ask for a pause at a viewpoint without any discussion with other passengers.

Your driver may also point out the road towards Demre, where the Church of Saint Nicholas and the rock-cut tombs of ancient Myra are found. Further along the coast, the Kekova area near Üçağız and Simena is known for its sunken ruins. Both are famous places on the Lycian coast, and both are popular reasons to build a longer day around the transfer.

Typical Times and Busy Times

The figure of 204 minutes assumes normal traffic and no long stops. Plan on that as the basic driving time. In the quieter months the road runs at a steady pace and the real journey often matches the estimate closely. In July and August, and on public holiday weekends, the stretch around Antalya and the roads leading to Kemer can slow down in the afternoon. A start in the morning avoids most of that traffic.

If you add stops, the day becomes longer. A coffee break, a photo stop and a quick lunch easily add an hour. A visit to Myra or a boat trip around Kekova turns the transfer into a full day. Tell us in advance what you want and we will assign a plan that fits.

Pickup in Side: Practical Points

Side's old town is mostly closed to cars. The narrow lanes of shops, fish restaurants and glassware stalls cannot take normal traffic, so taxis and private cars stop at the edge of the old centre. If your hotel is inside the pedestrian area, the driver will meet you at the nearest drop-off point and help with your bags from there. Send us the exact hotel name and a booking reference when you reserve, so the driver knows which entrance to use.

Larger beachfront properties are easier. Hotels such as TUI BLUE Barut Andiz, Acanthus, Cennet Barut Collection and Bellissima are all places our drivers know. Some of them have a drop-off point a short way from the main gate, and some are close enough to each other that guests confuse them. A clear hotel name saves time.

A few sensible habits make the pickup smooth:

  • Be ready at the agreed time with your luggage at the lobby or entrance.
  • Check out before the driver arrives, so you do not delay the start of a 3 hour 24 minute journey.
  • Tell us in advance about unusual luggage such as a surfboard, a golf bag or extra cases, so we can assign a suitable vehicle.
  • Mention children in your booking. Infant and booster seats are available on request.

Because the journey is long, many guests prefer an early start. Leaving Side at around breakfast time gives you a comfortable arrival in Patara in the afternoon, with enough daylight to walk to the beach before evening.

Arriving in Patara

Patara is not a big resort town. It is a small area of guesthouses, family hotels, apartments and a few restaurants around the village of Gelemiş, set back from the coast and close to the ruins. The beach lies a short distance beyond the ancient site. Your driver will take you to the exact address on your booking, so please send it in good time. In a village like this, many streets are narrow and addresses can be hard to find on a map, so the name of the property and a phone number are very helpful.

If you are staying near the village centre, the drop-off is usually simple. If your accommodation is on a smaller lane or inside a garden complex, the driver may leave you at the nearest point and walk the last section with you. For a quiet place like Patara this is normal and it keeps the car off small paths.

After a drive of more than three hours, most guests want three things: a cold drink, a shower and a walk. Patara has quiet streets and a relaxed pace, so you can do all three without needing a taxi. The beach is the main attraction, and it is close enough for a stroll on your first evening.

Who Should Stay Where

The area around Patara suits several kinds of traveller.

Patara village (Gelemiş)

This is the most practical base for people who want the beach, the ruins and the quiet. The village has small hotels, pensions and family-run restaurants, and almost everything is reachable on foot or by a short ride. It suits couples, walkers, history lovers and families with older children. It does not suit travellers who want a loud nightlife or large resort entertainment.

Kalkan

Kalkan is a boutique harbour town close to Patara. It has a steep, whitewashed old quarter, small restaurants above the sea and a more polished feel. It suits travellers who want a smarter evening, and who are happy to travel a short way to the beach. Many people stay in Kalkan and visit Patara by car for the day.

Kaş

Kaş is further along the coast and is known for diving coves and a lively small-town atmosphere. It suits active travellers, divers and people who want to see Kekova and the Lycian coast by boat. It is a longer ride from Patara but works well as a second stop.

Choosing for your group

If you have small children and want the beach every day, choose Patara itself. If you are a couple who wants good dinners, consider Kalkan. If you want activities and boat trips, look at Kaş. Our drivers can take you to whichever base you choose, and the transfer from Side can be arranged to any of them.

Patara's Beach, Ruins and Lighthouse

Patara's beach is the reason many people come. It is about 18 km of unbroken golden sand backed by dunes, and it is protected as a nesting ground for loggerhead turtles. That protection shapes how the beach is used. There are few buildings, no rows of sunbeds along the whole length, and rules that visitors are asked to follow. Respect any signs about access and evening restrictions, which exist to protect the nests.

The walk from the car park to the water crosses soft sand and dunes. Bring sandals in the heat, because the sand can be very hot in the middle of the day. Water and sun protection are worth carrying, since shade is limited on the wide beach.

The ancient city behind the beach was the capital of Lycia. You enter through a monumental triple gateway, which is one of the best-known structures on the site. A restored theatre and other ruins lie among the pines and sand. A lighthouse near the harbour area is counted among the oldest known in the world. All of this is within walking distance of the sand, so a visit to the ruins and a swim can sit in the same day.

Food and Evenings

Evenings in Patara are quiet. Restaurants in the village serve Turkish dishes, fresh fish, grilled meat, mezes and simple home-cooked food. Many have gardens or terraces, and dinner tends to be unhurried. If you come from Side, where the old harbour has fish restaurants beside the illuminated Temple of Apollo and a relaxed bar scene, you will notice the change. Patara is calmer and darker, with more stars and fewer people.

For a livelier night, Kalkan and Kaş have more restaurants and bars within a short drive. A private driver can take you there and bring you back, which is useful when you do not want to drive after dinner. Tell us your plan when booking and we can arrange a return.

Many small places in Patara operate on their own seasonal schedule. In the early and late parts of the season some restaurants and shops may be closed or have shorter hours. Ask your accommodation about dinner options before you arrive.

Travelling with Children

A journey of more than three hours is a long time for children, so a few preparations help.

  • Ask for child seats when you book. Infant and booster seats can be fitted before the trip.
  • Start early or time the departure so that the main driving happens during a nap.
  • Bring water, snacks, a charged tablet and a small toy or book.
  • Ask the driver for a comfort stop. A private transfer allows a short break whenever needed, without waiting for other passengers.
  • Pack a light bag with a change of clothes that stays within reach, not in the boot.

Patara itself is well suited to children. The beach is wide and sandy, and the water deepens gradually in many places. The ruins give older children a fun walk through a real ancient city. The pace of the village is slow and traffic is light. Bring hats and sun protection.

Early Flights and Late Arrivals

Patara is a long way from Antalya Airport, and this matters if your plans include a flight. If you plan to fly home from Antalya after a stay in Patara, the return journey will be roughly as long as the one you made from Side, because the road follows the same coastal corridor. Leave generous time. A good rule is to plan your departure from Patara several hours before check-in begins, and to avoid cutting the margin close.

If you have an early morning flight, consider leaving the day before and staying near the airport, or ask us to arrange a night departure. Our drivers do night journeys, and the roads are generally quieter. Tell us the flight time and we will work backwards to suggest a pickup.

If you arrive in Patara late in the evening, tell your accommodation in advance. Small guesthouses in a village may not have a reception open late, and a call or message beforehand makes check-in easy. Your driver can also give you a quick call or message on the way.

For travellers who land at Antalya Airport and want to go straight to Patara, remember that Antalya Airport lies about 65 km from Side. A transfer from the airport to Side takes between 55 minutes and 1 hour 15 minutes. A direct airport journey to Patara would be a different, separate route. If you have booked this Side to Patara transfer, you are moving between two stays, not travelling from the airport.

Returning to Antalya Airport

When you plan your return, consider these points.

  • Start early. The drive east passes through the Kumluca, Kemer and Antalya sections, and afternoon traffic builds near the city.
  • Add a safety margin. Airport check-in rules vary by airline, so ask your carrier about timing and plan to arrive earlier than the minimum.
  • Allow for breaks. A comfort stop on a long drive adds time.
  • Confirm the flight details with us. Send your flight number, and our team can adjust if the schedule changes.

In peak summer, the airport area is busy and the approach roads slow down. If you are returning on a Saturday in high season, give yourself an extra margin. If the flight is in the early morning, travel the day before and stay near the airport.

Day Trips from Patara

Patara is a good base for exploring western Lycia. Several places are within reach by a short drive.

Xanthos and Letoon

Xanthos was one of the most important cities of Lycia, and Letoon was its religious centre. Both are on the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites and are close to Patara. They suit history lovers and give a deeper view of Lycian civilisation than the main ruins alone.

Saklıkent Gorge

Saklıkent Gorge is a deep mountain gorge known for its icy water. Visitors wade through the cold stream between steep rock walls. It is refreshing on a hot day, and many people combine it with a river-side lunch. Bring water shoes and a change of clothes.

Kalkan

Kalkan is the closest town, with a harbour, steep lanes and many restaurants. It makes a pleasant evening trip or a half-day outing.

Kaş and Kekova

Kaş is known for diving coves and a small-town feel. From the area, boat trips go to Kekova, where sunken ruins can be seen beneath the water, and to Üçağız and Simena. This is a long day but a rewarding one.

Myra and Demre

On the way along the coast, Demre is home to the Church of Saint Nicholas and the rock-cut tombs of ancient Myra. If you want to break the Side to Patara transfer with one major stop, this is the classic choice. Tell your driver when booking, and the plan can include it.

Seasons: When to Go

The Mediterranean climate gives this coast more than 300 days of sunshine. Summers are hot, with temperatures above 35°C, and winters are mild, around 15°C. The sea season runs from April to November.

  • Spring (April and May): Warm days, green hills and fewer visitors. A good time for the ruins, because walking is comfortable. The sea is cooler.
  • Summer (June to August): Hot and busy. The beach is at its best for swimming, but the sand is very hot at midday. Start journeys early to avoid the strongest heat and the heaviest traffic.
  • Autumn (September to November): Warm sea, softer light and calmer roads. Many travellers consider this the best time for combining beach and sightseeing.
  • Winter (December to March): Mild, quiet and often pleasant for walking. Some restaurants and small hotels in Patara close for the season, so check before you plan.

The drive is possible in all seasons. In winter, mountain sections can have rain, so allow a little extra time.

Why Travel Privately on This Route

There is no direct bus between Side and Patara. Public transport means changing two or three times, often through Antalya or Fethiye, with waits at bus stations and luggage to carry between platforms. Over a distance of 194 km and more than three hours, that adds up to a long and tiring day.

A street taxi works on a meter, and over a distance like this the final fare is hard to predict. A private transfer is arranged in advance, with a price agreed at booking. You are collected at your hotel, your luggage stays in the same vehicle all the way, and the car is reserved for your party alone. We do not pick up other passengers and we do not add extra stops that you did not ask for.

Other practical benefits include:

  • Door-to-door service from your hotel in Side to your address in Patara.
  • Flexible stops for photos, meals and short visits, such as Myra.
  • Space for luggage, and a suitable vehicle if you tell us about special items.
  • Child seats on request.
  • A WhatsApp contact for driver details and support once your booking is confirmed.

A Simple Plan for the Day

Here is one example of how the day can work.

  1. In the morning, check out of your Side hotel and meet the driver at the agreed point.
  2. Drive west on the D400 past Manavgat and around Antalya.
  3. Stop for a break near Kemer or Kumluca, when you want coffee or a walk.
  4. Continue along the Lycian coast, with a possible stop near Demre.
  5. Arrive in Patara in the afternoon, check in, and walk to the beach before sunset.

If you prefer to travel straight through, the same plan works without the stops, and the drive takes about 3 hours and 24 minutes in normal traffic.
