Everything you need to know about Antalya City Center to Alanya
From Antalya City Center to Alanya by private car
Alanya sits at the eastern end of the Turkish Riviera. Antalya City Center sits at the heart of it. Between them lie about 121 km of coast road and, on a typical day, around 127 minutes behind the wheel. That is a little over two hours. It is long enough that the way you travel matters.
A private transfer takes the effort out of it. Your driver collects you at your Antalya hotel lobby or address. The car runs straight east along the Mediterranean. It stops at your hotel entrance in Alanya, with nothing in between. There is no bus terminal, no change of vehicle and no shared shuttle calling at other hotels. This page explains what the drive is like, where it can slow down, what you will find at the other end, and how to plan the journey back.
The drive east along the D400
The route follows the D400 coastal highway eastbound. It leaves Antalya through the eastern suburbs. It then runs through Aksu, Serik, Manavgat and Side before Alanya appears ahead. For most of the way the Taurus mountains rise on your left and the sea lies somewhere to your right. The road is a dual carriageway for much of the distance. The pace is steady and the surface is easy.
The first part of the drive is the flat coastal plain around Aksu and Serik. This is farming country, with greenhouses and orange groves close to the road, and with the mountains standing clear behind. In the second part you pass Manavgat and Side. These are busy resort areas with a lot of local traffic joining and leaving the main road. After Side the road settles again. The coast narrows, the mountains move closer to the sea, and the last stretch brings you towards the headland that Alanya is built around.
If you are sitting in the back of a private car, this is a good drive for watching the country change. You leave a big city, cross a wide agricultural plain, pass the resort strips around Side and Manavgat, and arrive at a rocky peninsula with a castle on it.
Typical times and busy times
Use the 127-minute figure as your starting point. It is the normal driving time from Antalya City Center to Alanya. Mid-week drives are usually consistent and close to this number.
Summer Saturdays are different. On those days the coast road carries a lot of changeover traffic, as holiday groups leave hotels and new groups arrive. The windows to watch are 11:00 to 15:00 and 17:00 to 19:00. In those hours the journey can take 30 to 45 minutes longer than normal. If you have a check-in, a boat trip, a dinner booking or a flight to keep, add that margin to your plan.
An early-morning or late-evening run is usually quicker. If your dates are flexible, a mid-week departure outside the busy windows gives the most predictable journey.
Heavy traffic and the inland option
In severe summer congestion on the D400, there is an alternative. The inland route via Korkuteli adds distance, but it can reduce the total drive time. Your driver watches live traffic and switches to this route only when it makes sense. You do not need to ask for it or plan for it. If the coast road is moving normally, the driver stays on it.
A pause on the way
A drive of more than two hours is easier with a short break. The Manavgat or Avsallar service area is roughly the halfway point. A pause of five to ten minutes is standard, and clean facilities are available at both. Tell your driver at the start if you want to stop, or if a child or an older passenger needs a break sooner. The driver can adjust. Families with small children often prefer to stop once, early, and then drive on.
Getting ready for the journey
A few simple choices make the transfer smoother.
- Keep valuables and medicines with you. Keep them in a small bag on your seat, not in the boot.
- Tell us about luggage when you book. The vehicle is sized to your group and your bags. If you have large cases, sports equipment or beach gear, say so in advance.
- Ask for child seats when you book. Child seats are available on request. Give us the ages of the children and we fit the right seat.
Choosing the right vehicle
The standard car holds four passengers with luggage. For groups of five to seven we use a larger van. For groups of eight to fifteen we use a bigger minibus. Tell us your group size when you book, and the right vehicle is assigned.
Arriving in Alanya
You first see Alanya as a rocky headland pushing out into the sea. The Seljuk Alanya Castle stands on top of it. Below it, the Red Tower (Kızıl Kule) guards the old harbour. This is the oldest part of the town, and also the part most visitors want to see first.
Alanya is a long town. Its hotels and apartment blocks stretch for many kilometres along the coast, on both sides of the castle headland. This is why the drop-off address matters. Two hotels that both say "Alanya" can be half an hour apart by road. When you book, give us the hotel name and the district, and share a GPS pin if the property is small.
Drop-off practicalities
Your driver takes you to the hotel door or to the entrance of your apartment complex. These are the practical points to know.
- Hotels. Give the full hotel name. The driver stops at the main entrance or the reception drive, where staff can help with the bags.
- Apartment complexes. Alanya has many large residential complexes. Give us the complex name at booking. Our drivers know the major ones by name, including Sun Hill, Goldcity, Soleil and Kuchen.
- Smaller properties. Send the address or a GPS pin. This avoids a phone call at the end of a long drive.
- Late arrivals. If you arrive after reception has closed or at a quiet hour, tell us your arrival time. Keep your host's or hotel's contact details to hand.
Where the fare applies
The fare for this route covers the whole Alanya region. That includes central Alanya, Tosmur, Kestel, Mahmutlar, Avsallar, Konaklı and Çıkçılı. It is the same vehicle and the same hotel-door or apartment-complex drop-off at any address in that area. You do not need to pick one district over another because of the transfer.
Which part of Alanya suits you
Alanya covers a lot of coast. Choosing the right district is as important as choosing the right hotel.
Central Alanya
Central Alanya sits around the castle headland, the old harbour and the seafront. It suits visitors who want to walk everywhere. Restaurants, cafés and shops line the waterfront. The harbour is where boat trips leave. The old town climbs the slope behind. Central Alanya is lively in the evening. If you want noise and choice on your doorstep, this is the district to choose.
Tosmur and Kestel
Tosmur and Kestel lie along the coast on either side of the centre. They are calmer than the old harbour, but still close enough for a short taxi or dolmuş ride into town. They suit couples and families who want a more relaxed base with easy access to the main sights.
Mahmutlar
Mahmutlar is a long residential and resort strip east of the centre. It has many apartment complexes and a local, everyday character. It suits longer stays, self-catering holidays and anyone who prefers a quieter pace. Because many properties here are in complexes, giving the complex name when you book is especially useful.
Avsallar, Konaklı and Çıkçılı
Avsallar and Konaklı lie west of the centre, towards Side and Manavgat. Çıkçılı is also covered by the same fare. These areas have larger resort hotels and more space. They suit families who want a resort-style stay with a pool and a beach, and who do not mind a short ride into the centre when they want to go out. As the first areas you reach on the Alanya side, they also shorten the drive a little.
Beaches, the castle and the old harbour
The long sweep of Kleopatra (Cleopatra) Beach is the best-known beach in Alanya. It is a stretch of soft sand with clear water, and it draws sun-seekers all summer. Close behind it, the Damlataş Cave sits near the foot of the headland. Beyond the beaches, the headland itself rewards a walk.
- Alanya Castle. The Seljuk castle crowns the peninsula, high above the sea. The views across the coast are the main reason to climb up. Go early or late in the day, when the heat is lower.
- The Red Tower. The Red Tower (Kızıl Kule) stands over the old harbour. It is an easy walk from the seafront and a natural first stop after you check in.
- The harbour. Boat trips leave from the harbour, and the caves in and around the peninsula can be seen from the water. The harbour area is also a good place to walk in the evening.
- The seafront. The promenade is packed with restaurants, cafés and shops. It is flat and easy to walk, which suits families and older visitors.
Alanya is also a good base for exploring the Taurus foothills behind the coast. If you plan day trips, talk to your hotel about them after you arrive.
Eating and evenings
The seafront and the harbour are the main places to eat. Restaurants and cafés line the waterfront, and the choice ranges from simple grills to sit-down fish meals. Evenings are lively in the centre, with people walking along the promenade well after dark. Outside the centre, Mahmutlar, Kestel and the resort areas have their own restaurants and local markets, so you do not have to travel into town for every meal.
Families and children
A drive of more than two hours is a big ask for small children. A few habits help.
- Leave at a time that fits the children's routine. A departure around nap time often works well.
- Agree a stop before you leave. The service area near Manavgat or Avsallar is roughly halfway.
- Ask for the right child seat when you book, and give the ages of the children.
When you arrive, the beaches around the centre have shallow, clear water at the edges, and the seafront promenade is flat enough for pushchairs. Resort hotels in Avsallar and Konaklı suit families who want the beach, pool and food in one place. Apartment complexes in Mahmutlar and Kestel suit families who prefer to cook for themselves.
Early starts, late arrivals and flights
Not every journey fits a daytime schedule, so tell us your plans when you book.
- Early morning. If you must leave Antalya early, the road is usually clear and the drive is quick. Plan your hotel checkout and breakfast around the pickup time.
- Late evening. If you reach Antalya late and continue to Alanya, the drive is calm and the road quiet. Tell us your arrival time so the driver is ready, and tell your Alanya hotel that you will check in late.
- Flights. Antalya Airport (AYT) is about 13 km from the city centre, roughly 20 to 30 minutes depending on traffic. If you are connecting from the airport, share your flight number. Your driver can then track the flight and adjust to an early or late landing.
The return trip to Antalya
Plan the journey back with the same care as the journey out. The drive from Alanya to Antalya City Center takes about the same time, around 127 minutes in normal conditions. If the return is for a flight from Antalya Airport, build a margin on top of that.
- Start from the flight time and work backwards. Allow time to check in at the terminal, time to drive from Alanya, and a buffer for traffic.
- Avoid the summer Saturday windows. On those days, the hours from 11:00 to 15:00 and from 17:00 to 19:00 can add 30 to 45 minutes. If your flight falls on a Saturday, leave earlier.
- Choose a departure that suits the day. An early start usually gives the smoothest drive. A flight late in the evening gives you a relaxed last morning and a leisurely lunch before you go.
- Tell your hotel. Check out early enough that the driver does not wait. Ask reception to prepare breakfast in a bag if you leave before it opens.
If you book the return at the same time as the outward leg, your pickup time and address are already in place. Tell us the return date and the hotel in Alanya, and we arrange the Alanya to Antalya leg with the same care.
When to visit
Alanya is at its liveliest in the summer, when the beaches, harbour and seafront are busy and the boat trips run most days. This is also when the coast road carries the most traffic, especially on Saturdays. If you want the quieter roads and a calmer town, consider the shoulder months, when the drive east is easier and the beaches are less crowded. Whatever the season, the route is the same, and a private car makes it comfortable.
Booking the transfer
To book, give us the pickup address in Antalya City Center, the Alanya hotel or complex name and district, the date and time, the number of passengers, and the amount of luggage. Add the ages of any children who need a seat. We then confirm the vehicle that suits your group, and your driver meets you at the agreed time. The result is one driver, one vehicle, and a calm journey along the coast to your Alanya door.
Day trips from your Alanya base
Alanya works well as a base because several classic sights lie close by. Most of them sit on the same D400 coast road you travelled on the way in. That makes them easy to combine with the transfer, or to reach later by taxi, dolmuş or an organised excursion.
- Dim Cave and the Dim valley. East of the town centre, the Taurus foothills reach the coast. A cave in the hillside and a cool river valley with shaded riverside restaurants make an easy half-day away from the beach.
- The shipyard and the old town. The Ottoman-era shipyard (Tersane) sits on the harbour below the castle. It is a short walk from the Red Tower and fits into the same morning as the castle climb.
- Side. Going back towards Antalya, the old town of Side has Roman remains beside the sea, including the Temple of Apollo on the shore. It is a pleasant stop for a late lunch if you travel between the two cities by road.
- Aspendos and Perge. These ancient cities lie nearer Antalya than Alanya. Aspendos is known for its very well-preserved Roman theatre. Treat them as a full-day trip, ideally on the day you move between the two cities, rather than a short detour.
In July and August, plan outdoor sightseeing for the morning and keep the middle of the day for the pool or a shaded lunch.
Markets, shopping and local food
Alanya is a working town as well as a resort. Away from the seafront, the streets behind the harbour hold small shops, bakeries and everyday cafés. Prices and the mood are usually calmer there than on the promenade.
What to look for
- Weekly street markets. Many Alanya districts, including Mahmutlar and Kestel, have a neighbourhood market on a set day each week. Ask your hotel reception which day the nearest one runs. Stalls sell fruit, vegetables, olives, cheese, spices and dried goods.
- Subtropical fruit. The warm coast around Alanya is known for growing bananas, alongside oranges, lemons and other citrus. Local fruit stalls are a good place to try them when they are in season.
- Bakeries and breakfast. A Turkish breakfast of bread, tomatoes, cucumbers, olives, cheese and eggs is easy to find. Gözleme, a thin flatbread filled with cheese, spinach or potato, is a popular lunchtime choice.
- Fish by the harbour. Grilled sea bream and sea bass are common choices at the harbour restaurants. Check the daily catch with the waiter before you order.
Shopping tips
The old town and the seafront have the widest choice of souvenirs, leather goods, textiles and ceramics. Compare a few shops before you buy. Pack fragile items such as ceramics in the middle of a suitcase, not at the top.
Groups, sports gear and the last day
Large groups and lots of equipment
Golf bags, bicycles, snorkel sets, surfboards and child buggies all take space, and the right vehicle is chosen from the number of passengers and the number of bags together. When you book, list each item. A bagged bicycle needs more boot space than a standard suitcase, so a group of six with two bike bags may need a larger vehicle.
For a group that arrives at different hotels within Alanya, give each address at booking. Two Alanya hotels can be half an hour apart by road, so your driver plans the order of drop-offs.
Summer crowds or the shoulder season
In peak summer the beaches fill by mid-morning and the seafront stays busy until late. In spring and autumn the town is quieter, the sea is still pleasant for many visitors, and sightseeing on foot is more comfortable. Some seasonal boat trips and beach venues may run less often outside summer, so check your plans with the hotel after arrival.
The last day before an evening flight
Many guests leave Alanya on the final day with several hours to fill before an evening flight from Antalya. A calm plan works best.
- Check out in the morning and leave the bags with reception.
- Spend the morning at the beach, or take a last walk up to the castle while the air is cool.
- Have a long lunch on the harbour.
- Collect the bags and meet your driver at the time agreed at booking.
- Start the drive early enough to absorb a traffic delay on the D400, then check in at the terminal with time in hand.
Keep medicines and travel documents in a small bag on your seat, not in the boot.

The ground truth
Alanya
Alanya sits at the eastern end of the Antalya coast, where the mountains push right down to the sea and a Seljuk castle occupies the headland between two beaches. It is the furthest of the big resort towns from Antalya Airport — but Gazipasa Airport is only a short run along the coast, which changes the arithmetic for anyone who can choose their flight.

Known for
- 01A 13th-century castle on a rock headland, still walled, with the town wrapped around its base
- 02Cleopatra Beach on the west side of the promontory, and a quieter, longer stretch running east
- 03A large permanent northern-European community, so menus, signage and shops skew multilingual
- 04The Dim river valley inland, where restaurants build their terraces over cold running water
- 05Gazipasa Airport 45 minutes east — the reason Alanya feels closer than the map suggests
Worth your time
Before you land
- If you can fly into Gazipasa (GZP) rather than Antalya (AYT), do it — the transfer is roughly a third of the distance.
- The castle road is steep and narrow; a transfer up and a walk down is the comfortable way round.
- Mahmutlar and Kestel are separate towns east of the centre, not Alanya neighbourhoods — give your driver the actual district.
