Çıralı sits within the Kemer district, but it feels like a different world altogether from Kemer's marina and strip of clubs. It's roughly 80 km from Antalya city, and about 25-30 minutes down a narrow mountain road once you turn off past Kemer. Tucked under the slopes of Mount Tahtalı, right where the Taurus range drops almost straight into the sea, this village has stayed small on purpose. Because it sits inside the Beydağları Coastal National Park and its beach is a protected loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) nesting site, building height is capped at two storeys and there are no chain hotels or high-rises here. What you get instead is a scatter of small pensions, wooden bungalow lodges and boutique guesthouses tucked between pomegranate trees, orange groves and pine forest. We've been driving guests in and out of this village for years, and almost every one of them says the same thing on the way back: "we should have booked more nights here."

Çıralı's beach runs for about 3.5 km of sand and fine shingle, with almost no development behind it -- one of the rare stretches on this coast where that's still true. A small stream splits the beach roughly in the middle before reaching the sea, and during summer nights sections are kept unlit for the nesting turtles. Sun loungers and umbrellas are deliberately limited by the village authority, so it never feels crowded even in August. From nearly any pension in the centre you can walk to the sand in five to ten minutes; by taxi it's a matter of moments.

Immediately south of Çıralı, sharing the same valley, lie the ruins of ancient Olympos -- once an important Lycian League harbour city, its remains spread across both banks of a stream that runs down to the sea. You'll find necropolis areas, bathhouse remains, traces of a theatre, and a Genoese castle (Olympos Kalesi) on the hilltop above. A taxi from central Çıralı gets you to the entrance in five to ten minutes, and from there it's an easy, shaded forest walk down to the coast. Climbing to the castle rewards you with a view over both the ancient harbour and Çıralı bay -- genuinely worth doing at sunset.

One thing that makes Çıralı unlike anywhere else is Yanartaş, the "burning rock." On the slope of Mount Tahtalı, natural gas seeping from the ground has been igniting on its own for thousands of years, with dozens of small flames burning simultaneously across a rocky patch of hillside. In antiquity this was believed to be the lair of the Chimaera from the myth of Bellerophon, and there are the remains of a small shrine to Hephaestus nearby. From the car park it's an easy 20-minute path up to the flames. A taxi from central Çıralı reaches that car park in five to ten minutes. Most of our guests time it for early evening -- flames after dark are far more striking than by day. Having your driver wait, or booking a pickup for the way back, is the practical way to do it.

Worth the extra distance is the cable car up Mount Tahtalı (ancient Mount Olympos, 2,365 m), which departs from the neighbouring town of Tekirova -- about 30-35 minutes by taxi from Çıralı. On a clear day the summit gives you a view across most of the Antalya gulf. Departure times can shift with wind conditions, so it's worth planning the day with your driver in advance. Çıralı also lies on the famous Lycian Way long-distance trail, which passes through Olympos and continues south along the coast to the quieter bay of Adrasan. Walking the whole route takes days, but the Çıralı-Olympos stretch alone can be done in a couple of hours; for those who'd rather just see Adrasan, it's about a 45-50 minute taxi ride, and we handle day-trip round trips there too.

Two places in Çıralı we drop off and pick up from regularly are MyLand Nature, tucked into the greenery just outside the centre, and Olympos Lodge, set at the edge of the forest. Neither is a big resort -- both fit the village's low-key character, which is exactly what most people come to Çıralı for. The route into MyLand Nature usually runs in from just north of the village centre, while Olympos Lodge is reached along the forest-edge road; our drivers know both by heart, including for late-night arrivals. The distance from Antalya Airport to Çıralı is about 80 km, and the drive typically takes 70-90 minutes depending on traffic -- the last stretch, after Kemer, winds down a narrow but genuinely scenic mountain road.
