Private Transfer from Lara to Patara: Across Antalya's Whole Western Coast

Lara is the golden, resort-lined beach strip on the eastern side of Antalya. Patara is a village, a ruined Lycian capital and one of the longest open beaches in Turkey, at the far western end of the Antalya province. Between them lie 146 kilometres of road and about 154 minutes of driving, which makes this one of the longer transfers you can book on this coast. It is also one of the most scenic. The journey crosses almost the entire Lycian shore, from Antalya city through the pine forests of Kemer and the orange groves of Finike, past Demre and Kaş, and down to the dunes of Patara.

Turkey Transfer arranges this as a private ride. Your driver collects you at your hotel entrance in Lara, loads your bags and drives you directly to your accommodation in Patara. No other passengers join you, nobody else sets the schedule, and you can ask for a stop whenever the view or your stomach requires one. This guide explains what the drive is like, where the road is quiet and where it is busy, what to expect on arrival, and how to plan your time once you are in Patara.

The Drive at a Glance

The distance is 146 kilometres and the usual driving time is about 154 minutes, a little over two and a half hours without stops. Most guests pause at least once, so plan on about three hours door to door.

The road is the D400 coastal highway for most of the way. It is a good route but not a motorway. Past Kemer it is a two-lane road in many places, with climbs, bends and slower trucks, so a calm, experienced driver matters more than speed.

Leaving Lara: Pickup and the First Kilometres

Lara hotels sit along a long stretch of coast between the city centre and the airport, and many of them are large resorts with long entrance roads and big lobbies. Tell us your hotel name and, if possible, the entrance or reception where you want to be collected. The driver then waits at the right door rather than circling the property. This saves time when you have several suitcases and a family to gather.

From Lara the first part of the drive is within the city. You cross the Antalya urban area from east to west, passing the Düden valley, the old town direction and the long run along the bay towards the western districts. This is the section of the journey that is most affected by traffic. On an ordinary morning you move steadily. At rush hours, and on summer weekends when residents and holidaymakers all head to the beaches, the city roads slow down. If you have a fixed appointment in Patara, for example a villa check-in agreed for a certain time, mention it when booking so we set your pickup with some margin.

An early start works well. You cross the city before the heaviest traffic and reach Patara in time for the first afternoon on the beach.

Along the Kemer Coast: Pine Forests and Sea Views

Once you leave the western edge of Antalya, the D400 follows the foot of the Taurus Mountains. The road enters the Kemer area, where dark green pine forest comes right down to the shoreline and small bays appear between the trees. This is the stretch where the Turkish Riviera looks its most dramatic: sharp mountain ridges behind, the sea on the left and resort towns spaced along the coast. Kemer itself and then Tekirova pass in quick succession.

South of Tekirova the character changes. The road is quieter and the settlements become smaller. You pass the turning for the ancient site of Phaselis, a harbour city set in pine woods, and later the side roads that lead to Çıralı, Olympos and Adrasan. These are well-known corners of the Lycian coast, popular with walkers and with guests who prefer a quieter beach to a big resort. Most visitors on a long transfer like this one do not leave the main road here, but the views of the coast through the trees are among the best of the whole drive.

Passengers prone to car sickness should sit at the front and tell the driver if they want a pause.

Kumluca, Finike and the Orange Groves

Beyond the mountains the landscape opens out. Around Kumluca and Finike the coastal plain widens, greenhouses cover large areas and, in season, orange and other citrus groves line the road with fruit stalls beside them. The driving is easier here, although you meet more tractors, vans and local traffic, particularly in the morning and late afternoon.

Finike is a working coastal town with a marina and a long reputation for its oranges. If you want to buy fruit, ask your driver to stop at a roadside stand. This part of the journey is also a good place for a proper rest stop. Fuel stations and small restaurants are easier to find in the towns than in the empty stretches after them, so plan the longer break around Finike or Demre.

Demre and the Road Above the Sea

Further on you reach Demre, the modern town beside ancient Myra, famous for its rock-cut tombs and its link to Saint Nicholas, the early bishop of Myra. Boat trips toward Kekova, with its sunken Lycian ruins, start from nearby villages. Neither is on your direct line to Patara, but both are close enough to the road for a short visit.

After Demre the road climbs. The highway rises above the sea and runs along cliff-side stretches with long views over blue water. These are slower sections: the road bends, climbs and drops, and heavy vehicles reduce the speed. That is why the total time is longer than the kilometre figure suggests. If the day is clear, ask the driver for a pause at a viewpoint. The light on the water makes good photographs, and a few minutes at a safe lay-by cost very little time.

Kaş, Kaputaş and Kalkan

The road then approaches Kaş, a pretty harbour town with whitewashed houses, bougainvillea and a laid-back atmosphere. It is a favourite with divers and sailors, and a natural place for lunch if you want a longer day. The Greek island of Meis sits just offshore and is visible from the waterfront on a clear day.

Beyond Kaş, the highway runs high above the sea again. Not long before Kalkan you reach Kaputaş, a small beach tucked into a gap in the cliffs beside the road. A staircase leads down from the road to the water, and the sea there is an unusually bright turquoise. In July and August the roadside can be crowded, so expect a slower approach. Ask the driver whether to stop on the way or leave it for a day trip from Patara.

Kalkan follows, a terraced hillside town of white houses above a small harbour. It is a good spot for a late lunch and only a short drive from Patara. After Kalkan the road descends and turns toward the Patara plain.

Typical and Busy Times on This Route

The stated duration of about 154 minutes describes normal conditions. Several factors change it:

  • City traffic in Antalya, especially in the morning and early evening
  • Summer weekends and holiday periods, when traffic on the D400 increases
  • Slow trucks and farm vehicles on the climbs between Demre and Kaş
  • Stops for photos, food or fruit, which are your choice
  • Roadworks or weather, which occasionally affect individual sections

In high season, treat the journey time as a guide and allow a buffer. If you have a time-sensitive arrival, for example a boat trip or a restaurant booking, tell us when booking. In the quieter months of spring and autumn, the road is calmer and the time is easier to predict. In winter, rain and mist can make the climbs slower, and your driver will adjust his speed to the conditions rather than keep to a schedule.

Arrival and Drop-off in Patara

Patara sits where the Xanthos valley reaches the sea. You normally arrive in the village, often called Gelemiş, strung along the road that leads toward the ruins and the beach. Most accommodation is in small hotels, guesthouses and villas rather than big resorts, and many have narrow access lanes and gates.

For a smooth drop-off, send us the exact name of your accommodation and, if you have it, the map pin or the owner's contact details. Small properties are not always easy to find from the main road. If your host meets you with keys, tell them your expected arrival time and share any change on the day.

Check-in may be later than your arrival. If you are early, leave bags with the host and walk to the beach while the room is prepared. Patara has no late-night taxi rank, so ask your host about local transport, or arrange the next day's movements with us before you leave Lara.

Patara's Areas and Who Each Suits

Patara is small, so the choice is simpler than in a big resort, but there are still different bases.

The village centre (Gelemiş)

This is the heart of Patara: a single main road with restaurants, shops, markets, small hotels and the local bus stop. It suits independent travellers, couples and groups of friends who want to walk to dinner, hire a bike and make day trips. You are a short drive from the site entrance and the beach. It is the most convenient base if you are not renting a car.

Close to the ruins and the beach

Some accommodation lies nearer the road to the ancient site and the shoreline. This option suits guests who spend most of the day at the beach and want a shorter trip back to their room. It is quieter at night and places you among fields and dunes rather than the village shops.

Kalkan and the hills nearby

Kalkan is a short drive away and has the hillside villas, sea views and a more polished dining scene. If you have booked a villa with a private pool in the Kalkan area, tell us when booking so we plan the final drop-off correctly. The hillside lanes are steep, and the driver may need extra time to reach the door. Kalkan suits couples and families who want a villa and a quiet base with easy access to Patara beach.

The Beach: Eighteen Kilometres of Sand

The main reason to come to Patara is the beach. It is one of the longest uninterrupted sandy beaches on the Turkish coast, about eighteen kilometres of fine sand backed by dunes rather than hotels. The shore slopes gradually, and you can walk away from the main area to find a quiet patch to yourself.

There is very little shade away from the entrance. Take a hat, sunscreen and plenty of water, and use the loungers and umbrellas near the entrance. The sand can be very hot at midday in summer, so wear sandals.

Patara is also a nesting site for loggerhead turtles. The beach is protected, and access is limited in the evening during the nesting season, so respect any signs, fences or marked nests. It also keeps the beach free of loud music. The beach faces open water and can have waves, so watch small children near the sea.

The Ancient City of Patara

Patara was one of the most important cities of ancient Lycia, a harbour city and the meeting place of the Lycian League, an early federation of cities. The ruins lie among the dunes and fields on the way to the beach, and a visit combines naturally with a beach day.

Highlights include:

  • The theatre, a well-preserved semicircle of stone seats set into a hillside
  • The Lycian League assembly building, the council chamber that is often described as one of the earliest parliament-style buildings
  • The colonnaded street, with columns and stones among the sand
  • The ancient lighthouse, one of the oldest of its kind in the Mediterranean
  • The monumental arch at the entrance to the old city
  • The granary near the former harbour

Patara is also known as the birthplace of Saint Nicholas, the figure who later became linked with the Santa Claus tradition. Visitors often combine this connection with a trip to Myra near Demre, where he later served as bishop.

Go early in the morning or late in the afternoon in summer. The ruins have little shade, and the heat in the middle of the day can be intense. Wear comfortable shoes, as the paths are uneven and sandy.

Food and Evenings in Patara

Patara's evenings are quiet and informal. The village has a collection of family restaurants and cafés offering grilled fish, meat dishes, mezes, fresh salads and local gözleme, a thin flatbread filled with cheese, spinach or potato. In season, you often find stalls and small restaurants selling freshly squeezed orange juice, and many places serve food in gardens under trees or vines.

Dinner is relaxed and unhurried. Many restaurants have simple terraces, lantern lighting and a mix of locals and visitors. You can expect good value from small family businesses rather than polished dining rooms. For a more elaborate meal, take a short drive to Kalkan, which has a larger choice of restaurants overlooking the bay, or to Kaş for harbourside dining.

Nightlife is limited. There are a few bars and quiet places for a drink after dinner, but this is not a destination for clubs. That is exactly why many visitors choose it, and why a transfer that takes you from the busy Lara resort area to Patara can feel like a complete change of pace.

Families and Children

Patara works well for families who like beaches and open space. The shallows are gentle, the beach is wide and there is room for children to run and dig. Many guesthouses are family-run and welcoming to children, and restaurants are used to families.

For the transfer itself, child seats are available on request. Tell us the number and ages of the children when you book, so the right seats are fitted before pickup. The drive is long, so bring small games, snacks, water, headphones and a change of clothes. Children who are prone to travel sickness should sit with a view through the front or side window, and a short stop on the Kemer or Finike stretch helps.

Plan a break at a safe place with toilets about halfway. Many families stop around Finike or Demre, where facilities are easier to find. If you are travelling with a baby, let us know your feeding and nap times so the departure suits them. A start timed around a nap often makes the ride much quieter for everyone.

Late-Night and Early Flights

If you arrive at Antalya Airport late and are staying in Lara for the night, a morning transfer to Patara is simpler than a night drive. The D400 has bends and climbs that are less relaxing in the dark, and many small Patara properties are hard to find at night. If you must travel late, tell us your arrival time and your host's contact so check-in is arranged in advance.

For a return with an early flight, an early start is needed. A departure from Patara before dawn is possible, but tell your accommodation in advance so someone is ready to hand over keys. Do not rely on finding late-night food or transport locally.

Planning the Return Trip to Lara or the Airport

The route back is the same road in the opposite direction: 146 kilometres and about 154 minutes between Patara and Lara. For a return to Lara, leave Patara early enough to reach the city before the evening traffic, and keep a buffer for stops.

If you are returning to catch a flight, the airport lies on the eastern side of Antalya, close to Lara, so the final part of your journey crosses the city. Count back from your flight time: check-in and security, the drive itself, any stops, and a margin for city traffic. A morning flight means leaving Patara very early, or staying a night nearer the airport. An evening flight allows a relaxed final morning on the beach.

Tell us your flight number and time when you book the return, and we agree on the pickup time together.

Day Trips from Patara

Patara is a good base for exploring the western Lycian coast. With a driver or a rental car, the following trips are all within reach, and we can arrange onward private transfers on request.

  • Xanthos and Letoon, two ancient Lycian sites in the Xanthos valley close to Patara, recognised by UNESCO as part of the Lycian heritage
  • Kalkan, for the harbour, the hillside streets and sunset views
  • Kaputaş beach, the turquoise cove on the road toward Kaş
  • Saklıkent Gorge, a long narrow canyon inland where visitors walk in cold, shallow water
  • Kaş, for harbour dining, boat trips and the offshore island of Meis
  • Kekova and Demre, for the sunken ruins and the Myra tombs
  • Fethiye and Ölüdeniz, further west for another coast and beach scenery

Some of these are better combined: Xanthos and Letoon fit together in a half day; Saklıkent can be paired with a stop at a village restaurant on the way back. Tell us what you want to see and we can suggest a sensible order.

Seasons: When to Make This Journey

The Antalya coast has a Mediterranean climate with a very long sunny season. Summers are hot, often above 35 degrees Celsius, while winters are mild. The sea season runs roughly from April to November.

  • Spring (April to early June) is green, fresh and good for sightseeing. The sea is cooler, but the ruins and the road are comfortable, and the beach is quiet.
  • Summer (late June to August) is hot and busy. Beach days are best in the morning and late afternoon, the road is busier and Kaputaş is crowded. Start early and carry water.
  • Autumn (September to October) is one of the best times. The sea is warm, the heat has eased and traffic is lighter. This is an excellent time for the full journey.
  • Winter (November to March) is mild but quieter. Some small businesses in Patara close or reduce their hours, and rain can slow the road. The ruins are pleasant to visit in cooler weather.

If your plans depend on a particular restaurant or guesthouse, confirm that it is open outside the main season before you travel.
