10 Şirince hotels sit in our pickup index, so your driver gets the entrance, not the district.
Şirince sits on a hillside above the ancient city of Ephesus, in the Selçuk district of İzmir province, and it looks the part of an old Greek mountain village because it is one. Stone houses with red-tiled roofs climb a slope thick with olive trees, fig trees, and vineyards, linked by steep, narrow, cobbled lanes that were never widened for cars. Until the 1923 population exchange the village, then called Kirkince, was home to Anatolian Greeks; when they left for Greece, Turkish families from around Kavala and Thessaloniki settled the same stone houses, which is why the architecture still reads as unmistakably Greek. Today Şirince is best known as a "gastronomy village" — fruit wines, olive oil, handmade soap, dried fruit and woven textiles fill the shops around the square, and a weekend market draws day-trippers up from the coast. Walk uphill from the square in late afternoon, when the light turns the stone facades amber, and it's obvious why painters and photographers have made this their regular pilgrimage for decades.
At the top of the village, an easy walk up from the square, stands Aya Dimitri (the "Great Church"), a 19th-century Greek Orthodox church with a mosaic floor and a bell tower still standing above the rooftops — largely stripped inside, but worth the climb for the view alone. Lower down, a smaller church and the remains of the old Greek school fill in more of the village's history. Şirince's other signature is fruit wine: peach, blackberry, pomegranate and mulberry wines are poured for tasting in dozens of small shops the length of the main street. This part of a Şirince visit needs no taxi at all — it's the onward trips that call for one.
Şirince's real draw is how close it sits to one of the best-preserved classical cities in the world. The Ephesus archaeological site — the Library of Celsus façade, the Great Theatre, the marbled Curetes Street — is roughly a 15-20 minute taxi ride away. A little further up the same road, the House of the Virgin Mary (Meryemana), a pilgrimage site for Christian visitors, is also a short drive. Down in Selçuk town, the Ephesus Museum, the Basilica of St. John, and the İsa Bey Mosque are another 10-15 minutes by taxi. Combining all three in one day, with one car, is the itinerary most of our Şirince guests ask for, and we run it as an hourly or full-day taxi tour.
For guests wanting sea and sand, Kuşadası is about 30-35 minutes away by car, with Ladies Beach (Kadınlar Denizi), a working marina, and Pigeon Island (Güvercinada) making the short trip worthwhile. Travelers with more time can push on to Priene, Miletus and Didyma — three ancient cities roughly an hour to ninety minutes south that stand in Ephesus's shadow but are just as striking, and far less crowded. Şirince itself has short walking trails through its own olive groves and vineyards, usually reached by taxi to a trailhead and finished on foot.
Because the village's own lanes are narrow, steep, and largely closed to cars, transfers usually finish at the main square with a short walk to the door — something a driver who knows Şirince handles without fuss. We regularly transfer guests to Selanik Pansiyon, Nişanyan Evleri, Kirkinca Evleri Butik Hotel, Kilisealtı Pansiyon, Taş Konak, and Doktorun Evi Hotel, all restored stone houses that keep the village's original character. Helping with heavy bags — or a case of wine bottles bought on the way out — over those last cobbled metres is a normal part of the job here.
İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport (ADB) is Şirince's gateway, roughly 45 km away via the highway through Selçuk — around 50-60 minutes in normal traffic. As Antalya Transfer, we track your flight number and wait if it's delayed, meeting you inside the terminal with a name board; the fare is a fixed fare confirmed at booking, with no surprise extras added at the door. Late-night and early-morning arrivals get the same meet-and-greet, with door-to-door drop-off as close to your hotel's stone lane as a car can actually go.
