The town centre is a tangle of low whitewashed houses, a lively Saturday market, carpet and leather shops, and simple lokantas serving grilled meat and gözleme. Ayasuluk Hill rises right above the rooftops, crowned by Byzantine walls and the ruins of a Seljuk-era castle. Because ancient Ephesus was once a working harbour city, the coastline has silted up and retreated several kilometres over the centuries, which is why Selçuk itself sits inland - beach time means a short ride out to Pamucak or on to Kuşadası. Most visitors base themselves here for a night or two specifically to explore Ephesus and the historic sites clustered around it, and that's exactly the rhythm we've built our transfer service around.

Ephesus (Efes) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best-preserved Greco-Roman cities anywhere on the Mediterranean. The façade of the Library of Celsus, the 25,000-seat Great Theatre, marble-paved Curetes Street, and the still-being-excavated Terrace Houses mosaics can easily fill a full morning. It's only a few minutes by taxi from central Selçuk to either the upper or lower gate of the site, and going early - before the tour buses arrive from Kuşadası - makes a real difference to how the ruins feel. On Bülbül Mountain above Ephesus sits the House of the Virgin Mary (Meryemana), a modest chapel that's become a major pilgrimage stop for Christian visitors - a short taxi ride from town. Back in Selçuk itself, at the foot of Ayasuluk Hill, are the ruins of the Basilica of St. John, traditionally believed to mark the burial site of the apostle John, standing right next to the elegant Seljuk-era İsa Bey Mosque - both an easy walk from most hotels. On top of the same hill, a single standing column marks what's left of the Temple of Artemis, once one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The Ephesus Archaeological Museum, right in the town centre, holds the finds from the site, including the famous multi-breasted Artemis statues - worth an hour before or after the ruins themselves.

For travellers with an extra afternoon, we regularly drive guests up to Şirince, an old Greek stone village on a hillside about fifteen to twenty minutes from Selçuk by taxi, known for its fruit wines and narrow lanes lined with old houses. If you want the sea, Pamucak Beach - a long, sandy, relatively quiet stretch - is just a short taxi ride away, and Kuşadası, with its marina, promenade and cruise port, is around twenty minutes further. Public transport between these spots is thin, so most of our guests find it easiest to book one taxi for the whole day and skip the waiting.
