A handful of worthwhile sights sit a short taxi ride away. Akyaka, on the opposite shore of the gulf, is known for its distinctive timber-and-stone architecture and for paragliding off the hill above it — an easy taxi trip to Akyaka if you want to see the bay from above. Heading into Milas, the Gate with Lions (Baltalı Kapı), the Milas Museum and the old Hisarbaşı bazaar are all worth a look. Just outside Milas, the hilltop ruins of Beçin Castle, a well-preserved Seljuk-Menteşe era fortress, make for a scenic stop. Further into the hills, the ancient sanctuary of Zeus at Labranda is a genuinely special site, reached by a bit of climbing on the access road. A little further north, near Kıyıkışlacık, the ruins of ancient Iasos on its own small peninsula make for another doable day trip by taxi.
