Akyaka on the Gulf of Gökova, known for its reed-roofed Ottoman-Cretan houses, its wind for surfing and the clear, spring-fed Azmak River, is only 20-25 kilometres away and makes an easy half-day taxi trip, with riverside restaurants that are worth staying on for dinner. From there, boats run out to Cedar Island (Sedir Adası, also called Cleopatra's Island), a popular day excursion. For those wanting to go further, Marmaris (around 50 km), Bodrum (around 100 km), the thermal springs and İztuzu turtle beach at Dalyan, or Ölüdeniz near Fethiye are all realistic taxi or private transfer trips, either as a day tour out of Menteşe or as the next leg of a longer stay. The villages around Kötekli, just north of the centre, are a good option if you just want a quiet forest walk without going far.
