The ground truth
8 Konak hotels sit in our pickup index, so your driver gets the entrance, not the district.
Konak isn't a resort town — it's the historic heart of İzmir itself, the square where the whole city converges. Built directly over ancient Smyrna and facing İzmir's broad bay, this is the busiest, oldest, most lived-in corner of a 2,700-year-old port city. Arrive here and you land in the real İzmir, not a postcard version of it: ferries dock a few steps away, the tram runs through the square, and taxis queue at every corner.
At the centre of Konak Square stands the Saat Kulesi (Clock Tower), raised in 1901 to mark Sultan Abdülhamid II's 25th year on the throne — İzmir's single most photographed landmark. Facing it is the small, intricately tiled Konak Yalı Mosque, and together they frame the square. A short taxi ride from here takes you into Kemeraltı Bazaar, İzmir's centuries-old covered market of spice stalls, goldsmiths, tea houses and hidden courtyards. Above the square, the hilltop fortress of Kadifekale (the old "Velvet Castle") looks down over the whole bay — its Hellenistic-era walls are reachable by a short 10-15 minute taxi ride uphill, and it's one of the best sunset viewpoints in the city.
A few streets from Konak, in the Namazgah district, the İzmir Agora preserves the colonnaded galleries of the old Roman marketplace — an open-air archaeological site right in the middle of the city. Nearby, on the slopes of Bahri Baba Park, the İzmir Archaeology and Ethnography Museums hold finds spanning millennia. For green space, Kültürpark — the large fairground park that still hosts the İzmir International Fair — is a short taxi hop away, with its lake, open-air theatre and shaded walking paths.
Konak's most pleasant side is the Kordon, the long seafront promenade that runs along the bay toward Alsancak and Gündoğdu Square — locals walk it every evening, stopping for tea with a view of the sunset over the gulf. Right by the square, Konak Pier — a historic quayside building associated with Gustave Eiffel's company — now houses shops and restaurants, and the adjoining Konak ferry terminal sends boats across the bay to Karşıyaka and Bostanlı in about five minutes.
We've been driving guests from İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport into Konak for years, and we know this stretch of the city well. Among the addresses we drop guests at most often: Pastor, close to the square; The Yalı Konak Hotel, for travellers who want to stay inside the historic fabric; the family-run Büyük Konak; and Zafer Apart, a practical choice for longer stays. Wherever you're booked, our driver takes you straight to the door.
İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport (ADB) sits south of the city, roughly 14 km from Konak — usually a 25-35 minute drive depending on traffic. We meet you at arrivals with a name board, help with your bags, and drive you directly to your hotel: no stops, no shared rides, no transfers. The fare is a fixed fare confirmed at booking, so a delayed flight or heavy traffic never changes what you pay. Late-night arrivals are no problem either — the square quiets down after dark, even though it's one of the busiest spots in the city by day, and we'll be waiting regardless of your landing time.
We run the same way in İzmir as we do everywhere else: one car, one fixed price, door to door. Whether you need the airport run into Konak or a short taxi hop out to Kadifekale, the Agora, or Kemeraltı once you're settled in, we know the roads — you just need to grab your bag.
