Dikili itself is unhurried — a small marina, a seafront promenade, olive groves running right up to the edge of town, and none of the high-rise resort feel you find further south. Bergama couldn't be more different in focus: it looks inland, to the hill above the modern town where the Acropolis of Pergamon still stands. Because the two are only about 30 km and half an hour apart, most visitors base themselves on the coast and take a taxi inland for the day to see the ruins — which is exactly how we run this route.

The Acropolis of Pergamon, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, sits on a steep hilltop and holds the steepest ancient theatre ever built — a dramatic, almost vertical bank of ten thousand seats with the plain spread out below. On the same summit are the remains of the Temple of Trajan and the famous Library of Pergamon, once second only to Alexandria's (parchment takes its name from this city). Down in the lower town, the Asklepion was one of the ancient world's leading medical and healing centres, with its sacred marble way and whispering tunnel still intact. The Red Basilica (Kızıl Avlu), a vast temple originally built for Egyptian gods and later converted into a church, is named as one of the Seven Churches of Revelation. The Bergama Archaeological Museum ties it all together with finds from the site. Guests who want all four in a single day, we drive out by taxi and bring back to their hotel in the evening, waiting at each stop for as long as needed. Beyond the ruins, Bergama's old bazaar, the covered Kurşunlu Han and the Ottoman-era Ulu Mosque are an easy walk, and for guests with more time we also drive out to the Kozak Plateau, known for its pine nuts, or as far as Ayvalık — both easily combined with a Bergama day trip.

Dikili's own centre is built around a long coastal promenade, a small marina and the jetty where summer ferries leave for Mytilene on Lesbos. A short taxi ride south takes you to Çandarlı, a quiet peninsula town built on the site of ancient Pitane, known for its seaside castle walls and calmer beaches — a good half-day trip on its own. Inland, villages like Bademli and Kaynarca keep a thermal-spa tradition alive alongside olive oil production, the area's two other trades. History-minded travellers also stop at the small Dikili Fossil and Natural History Museum, which displays fossils found locally. For cooler air and open views, the Çaltıkoru plateau is another short taxi ride away. Dikili's own beaches tend to be calm and family-friendly rather than crowded, and watching the sun go down over Lesbos from one of the seafront fish restaurants is a genuinely local evening habit.
