The ground truth
64 Akyaka hotels sit in our pickup index, so your driver gets the entrance, not the district.
Tucked into the very back of Gökova Bay, at the foot of the pine-covered Sakartepe mountain, Akyaka is a small resort town that has deliberately stayed small. It belongs to the Ula district of Muğla province, and it wears the "Cittaslow" (Slow City) title with real pride — one of the first towns in Turkey to earn it. Instead of concrete apartment blocks, the streets are lined with stone houses topped with timber bay windows ("cumba"), a style revived by architect Nail Çakırhan, whose restoration work here won the Aga Khan Award for Architecture. We're a family-run transfer company that has been driving guests between Dalaman Airport and this coastline for years, and Akyaka is one of the places we genuinely enjoy describing, because it doesn't try to be anywhere else.
Ask any local what defines Akyaka and they'll point you to the Azmak River — a spring-fed stream that runs crystal-clear and faintly turquoise under plane trees on its short journey to the sea. Wooden platform restaurants line the banks, serving grilled trout while ducks paddle past; renting a canoe or kayak and drifting the current down to the coast is the town's signature afternoon. It's an easy walk from most hotels, or a short taxi hop if you'd rather not carry beach bags in the heat — and after we drop you at your hotel, our drivers are always happy to point you toward their favourite riverside table.
Akyaka's own beach is long, shallow and family-friendly, framed by the green wall of Sakartepe behind it. What put the town on the map internationally, though, is wind: Gökova Bay's reliable afternoon "meltemi" makes Akyaka one of Turkey's best kitesurfing and windsurfing spots, with the flat, shallow water near the river mouth acting as a natural beginner lagoon. Paragliders launch from the top of Sakartepe and land right on the beach in town — on a summer afternoon the sky above Akyaka fills with colourful canopies. Guests heading out for a kite lesson or a tandem flight often book a taxi transfer straight to the launch or school, and we're used to timing those pickups around wind and weather.
Boats from Akyaka's small harbour, or from neighbouring Gökova village, run out to Sedir Island (ancient Kedrai), home to the famous Cleopatra Beach — local legend says its sand was shipped in from Egypt. Gökova Bay is one of Turkey's first protected marine areas, and it's also a regular stop on Blue Cruise gulet routes out of Marmaris and Bodrum. A short taxi ride north brings you to Muğla's old town, with its tiled roofs and historic bazaar; heading south toward Marmaris, the ancient ruins of Amos near Turgut village make a quieter half-day trip. On Fridays, Akyaka's own weekly market fills the town centre with local olive oil, honey and handmade goods.
Most of the hotels and apart-hotels we serve in Akyaka are small, family-run places that suit the town's own low-key character — Ates Otel, Auka Otel, Big Blue Hotel and Çalcalar Hotel are among the addresses we drive to most often, all within easy reach of the river or the beach. Caretta Hotel and Cumba Apart are two more regulars on our list, popular with guests who want a quieter, more residential stretch of town. Whichever hotel is on your booking confirmation, just tell us the name — our driver will take you straight to the door, no transfers or shared minibuses involved.
Dalaman Airport is Akyaka's real gateway, roughly 55 km away and about 50-65 minutes by road depending on traffic. Our price is fixed at a fixed fare confirmed at booking regardless of delays, because we track your flight number and adjust the pickup time ourselves rather than asking you to guess. We meet you at arrivals with a name board, help with luggage, and drive you door-to-door — no waiting for other passengers, no roadside drop-off. The return leg works the same way: we pick you up from your hotel lobby with enough buffer to make check-in comfortably.
Plenty of summer charter flights land at Dalaman well after midnight, and we run those transfers as standard, with no night surcharge. Akyaka itself goes quiet early, so a late arrival usually means empty streets — but we walk you to reception rather than leaving you at the curb. Booking ahead in high season is worth doing, both to guarantee a vehicle and to lock in the fixed rate; we'll always try to fit in last-minute requests, but availability isn't something we can promise on short notice.
